Hormone replacement therapy
Hormone replacement therapy is done with biologically active synthetic or natural compounds that can be extracts from plants and animals and can mimic natural hormones in all of us. As we age hormone levels decline contributing to many problems in both men and women. There is often a discussion regarding synthetic or natural hormone replacement and what this really means. To the body synthetic hormones are foreign and they may have more side effects than natural products. This is true of almost all pharmaceutical products that are derived from natural products. Bio identical hormones are made to be identical to their natural state significantly decreasing the potential for side effects. These hormones are compounded and are made by specialty pharmacists usually in your local area but sometimes in other parts of the country.
Testing for Hormone Problems
The only way to know what hormones might contribute some of your symptoms is to test specifically for them. Men and women have slightly different profiles and what we would order and they will be discussed under their sections. Generally, the kinds of problems that we look for can range from sexual dysfunction, depression, and mood swings, or problems related to aging. Dr. Howard will discuss with you which tests should be ordered and will discuss with you at length the results so that you can have a very clear picture of what your needs are.

A word about cortisol
Cortisol is the only hormone in your body that increases with age. The problem with cortisol is that when levels remain elevated over a period of time they have many negative side effects. Cortisol is often known as the “stress” hormone. These days everybody seems overstressed which means that; their cortisol levels are typically quite elevated. Some of the common side effects of elevated cortisol over a period of time, also known as adrenal fatigue, can range from burnout loss of productivity at work, decreased energy levels, to chronic coughs and chronic allergic problems. To be more specific the adrenal gland plays a major role with your immune system and your ability to fight infection. There is a specific way to check for cortisol but unfortunately most of the general medical community tests a single time rather than 4 or more times to truly check how the adrenal gland is functioning. Dr. Howard will determine which type of testing you require and will make solid recommendations for you based on any findings.
